"Day 4 and still rockin" - Mr. Gower

Hey y'all! Today was another fabulous- but very long- day. We got up extra early to fulfill our bathroom cleaning duties which consisted of scrubbing the toilets, mopping the muddy floors, and cleaning the showers. After that we piled into the vans and headed off to the work site for another day of hard work. It was excruciatingly hot- by 9:15 the temperature (with the heat factor) was 105!
Today we worked on mostly on the siding and caulking. We even started painting the house (the owners picked a really pretty light blue. Its called Marlboro Blue)
There's also some friendly competition down here. Everyone's watching to see who will complete their house first, the Irish group (who, coincidentally are painting their house green) or the Korean church group from California. The Koreans also have some Prep students working with them. The Koreans, sadly, are blowing both the Irish and us out of the water. Their house is completely sided, painted and theyre almost done with the roof! Our contractor, Ben, tells us not to feel too bad, their mechanical minds are perfect for building houses. Plus they have a secret weapon in our very own Thane, who is so efficient a builder we think he's part Korean.
At 4:30, we cleaned up and went back to Lagniappe. We showered and got dressed verrry quickly so we could go out to dinner as planned. Even though we were missing taco night :-( we wanted to try some local cuisine.
We went to Shaggy's, a really nice little restaurant overlooking the bay and the harbor. We ate delicious seafood while listening to a Jimmy Buffett cover band. After that, we walked out on the pier, watched the sunset, took some pictures, and even met some locals catching catfish.
Next we headed to the Mockingbird Cafe in downtown Bay St. Louis. While sipping iced coffees, we sat outside listening to some more live music. All our friends from Lagniappe were there- the Koreans, the Irish, a group from Chicago, and even our contractors Ben and Tim. We met even more people, like Ben's wife, Sarah, whom he met at the Mockingbird 5 years ago when they were volunteering with Habitat. The town is adorable, and we still can't get over their Southern hospitality. Everyone greets us with a friendly " Hey Ya'll" and asks with great interest where we are from.
We got back to Lagniappe around 10:30, and were all headed off to bed soon. Tomorrows our last day of work, and even though the work has been long and hard, we're sad to see the week come to an end. But keep checking, there will still be blogs tomorrow night and on Saturday, from our trip to New Orleans! -Love ya'll, Caroline and Genny

  1. Hi Gen, You and Caroline did a great job describing your day! It sounds peaceful there --amidst the poverty and hardship the people there have been through. "To work is to pray" --so, just think of it that way every time you hammer a nail or mop the floors at 5AM. Keep up the great work! We are so proud of you! God Bless and Good Night! Love, Mom PS I just realized the time --Her Highness just went back to sleep. She has been getting night and day reversed -- either that or she just wants to play 24/7.She stood by herself for like three seconds tonight! Pax tecum.

  7. Hey Kev…
All that you have accomplished in this short time just proves that you can do anything you want to do with the” right tools”, hard work and the support of those around to you. What a wonderful way to start off your senior year! Keep this momentum going you will succeed at anything you do. Saw a quote by William Arthur Ward “ A house is made of walls and beams; a home is built with love and dreams” You have given these families the walls and beams and the chance to once again have their homes to fill with love and dreams. What a great feeling it will be at the end of the week to walk away knowing you have changed the lives of two families forever.
Love all the quotes and quips and can’t wait to hear all the stories behind them.
We miss you….enjoy the rest of your trip!
    Love you!
    Mom

  8. Mags,

The day 4 update came after we were asleep last night.Since you aren't home, we don't have to wait up until 11:00 for you to get in so we got to bed a little earlier! Sounds like y'all had another successful day and mixed a little fun in last night. We can't wait till you get home and hear all about it and see all your pictures. Keep smiling. We love you. God Bless.

Great job with all you've done this week. I wouldn't let Brace know you learned anything about tools and construction. Who knows what he'll have you doing at the hardware store!
I am at the airport waiting for my flight. Gma and pa said to say hello.

Love you and can't wait to see you!

  12. Mrs D/ Big Kahuna:
I just died laughing reading viennas wall post. Looks like you guys are having such a great trip! So wait, you allow them to eat snowballs? Guess times have changed.. so...does this mean you take everyone for southern fried cuisine? To your troops: keep your eyes peeled for a missing donnelly. you might find her and a select few accomplices snuggled in the local kfc.
    just sayin.

Anyway, your boys joined us for father's day, we were thrilled to have them! Terrence cried for chris for about an hour. Joe and Michael tried to comfort him, but he was inconsolable. I couldn't tell if he was crying because he missed Chris, or because he had to cover his work shift. . .

Either way, can't wait for you to get back! Mojito's and kitchen whimsy cuisine on the deck! xoxoxo love you!
